A road trip through mountains, fjords and endless nature in New Zealand
New Zealand felt like a country designed for road trips. When we picked up our campervan in Queenstown and hit the road, we were immediately surrounded by mountains, lakes and a sense of calm we hadn’t felt anywhere else.
Our first stop was Lake Wakatipu. The water was so clear that the mountains reflected perfectly on its surface. We took a short walk along the shore and met a local woman who told us she comes here every morning to watch the sunrise. “It never gets old,” she said — and we understood instantly.
The drive to Milford Sound was a highlight in itself. We passed through valleys, alongside waterfalls and through tunnels carved straight into the mountains. When we finally reached the fjord, we fell silent. The towering cliffs, the mist lifting slowly and the sound of waterfalls crashing into the water — it felt like standing at the edge of the world.
During a boat tour through the fjord, we spotted seals sunbathing on the rocks. Our guide explained that Milford Sound is one of the wettest places on earth, but we were lucky: the sun broke through and made the fjord shimmer like silver.
Our journey continued to Mount Cook National Park. We hiked the Hooker Valley Track, crossing swing bridges and gazing at glaciers and snow‑covered peaks. The air was crisp, the silence profound. We sat on a rock for a while, taking in a landscape millions of years old.
New Zealand touched us with its space, serenity and nature. Thanks to Wanderly Travel, we were able to explore this extraordinary country in a way that felt personal, adventurous and unforgettable.
